Annie Chown is a Cornish sound artist and composer, creating research-led works that explore the posthuman, the sensual, and the surreal. Through experimental approaches to acoustic and electronic composition, she creates immersive worlds that blur the boundaries between human and machine, self and other, real and imagined.
From cyborg stomachs to umbilical cord cables, Chown’s work embraces the theatrical and the uncanny. Using the surreal to navigate complex emotional and embodied experiences, she crafts performances that invite audiences into otherworldly spaces.
Chown’s creative output includes electroacoustic concert works, multi-channel installation, scores for improvisation, site-specific compositions, and custom interface design. She is particularly interested in voice, fusing live electronics with vocal improvisation to discover new ways of sounding feminist experiences.
She has created works for organisations including the BBC, the Rothschild Foundation, and The Temple Church Trust. Her compositions have been performed at venues across the UK, such as the Corpus Playroom, West Road Concert Hall, and Milton Court Concert Hall, as well as internationally.
An active collaborator, she works closely with movement artists from the BEX3 Agency, London Contemporary Dance School, and Trinity Laban Conservatoire. Her music is released on streaming platforms, and she performs regularly as a vocalist and pianist, both in live ensembles and recording settings. Most recently, she recorded vocals for Bare Roots, a BFI-Network short film, and has been working as a production assistant for MiMU, Imogen Heap’s wearable electronics company.
Alongside her creative practice, Chown is deeply committed to accessibility and community engagement in the arts. She is co-musical director of a community choir, previously performed recitals in residential homes before the pandemic, and participates in outreach initiatives supporting children in under-resourced communities across the Southeast of England.
She has recently graduated with a Double First Class BA(Hons) Degree in Music from the University of Cambridge and is currently engaged in postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School.
